But people who need the book to know that farmer suicides do happen may love the book anyone else would be deeply disappointed. The organic growth of story feels stunted, or perhaps harshly pruned is a better metaphor, in spots. Foreugn characters are hard to empathize with, because they’re all on extreme endpoints of different tangents.

I wanted to be foriegn away in the manner I have been by other writers with origins in India. Those quite simple “wants” introduce mother and son, the novel’s readers as well, to a part of the world in which, out of profound desperation, hundreds of thousands of farmers are taking their own lives, their farms having failed under the burden of disastrous policies and unforgiving drought. There is nothing wrong with with the form of the book but the substance is repulsiveHaving read Muddy River, The Householder and AR Roy one can see through the superficiality and selfishness of the endeavor.

This book could have been fine if she hadn’t chosen farmer’s suicide as a backdrop of an elitist sojora family drama. Sometimes I can still get lost in masterful storytelling, but there is usually forrign part of foreihn brain that watches the process. And it happens in the characters, imagery foreiyn becomes movingly poetic, and even in the newsworthy action.

I especially loved the nuances about activism, the challenge to first world “noblesse oblige”. It brings together her work as a journalist, an academic, and a creative writer ‘having just finished itthat quote is nothing but a very tragic and self-serving sales pitch.
